BARGERSVILLE, Ind. — The City of Bargersville is the latest to approve a DORA — or "designated outdoor refreshment area" — for businesses.
"We are very excited about this to be happening," said Kerri Edwards, manager of Taxman Brewing Company. She said allowing customers to take drinks to go will be beneficial, especially on nice summer days.
"It's going to eliminate, I think, some ambiguity for when we have the farmers market and some of the outdoor concerts, where people are going to be able to come in get some beers beforehand and then be able to carry them over there," said Edwards.
The Bargersville City Council passed a DORA law this week, but the law states drinks must come from a business that has a permit to do so.
"We've had a lot of interest in that we control allowing alcoholic beverages into our downtown and coolers and things like that, but this, this is another option for them," said Town Manager Dan Cartwright.
Those guidelines are that consumers can have no more than two drinks per person and no glass containers. But also you can't have more than 16 ounces of beer, 12 ounces of wine, cider or seltzer, and 10 ounces of a mixed drink.
Cartwright said the effort started when people living in Bargersville saw other towns doing it.
"This whole idea was generated from some of our residents when they saw on some of the news channels of other communities that are doing this," said Cartwright.
He said it fits with Bargersville's growing downtown district.
"It's a win-win situation for not only the town, the residents, as well as the vendors or the or the designees," said Cartwright.
Edwards said she is looking forward to the community enjoying outdoor refreshments.
"It will help with sales and just kind of the community, kind of coming together and just feeling comfortable with things," said Edwards.
