MUNCIE, Ind. (WTHR) - Ball State University's popular "Gum Tree" is no more.

Someone cut down the tree on the university's campus, where the tradition of sticking used chewing gum to the tree's bark grew over the years.

Students are sad to see it go, but they've got plans.

"We were kind of bummed, but, I mean, we could make another one. There's a little small tree right there you could put it on. There's tons of trees on campus, we could start it," said student Morgan Hagee.

The social media response to the chopping has been huge.

As is the way with social media, there is already a parody Twitter account for the tree.
