(WTHR) - When you send your kids off to college, you expect them to be safe. But already this school year, there have been two sexual assaults reported on campuses - one at IUPUI and another at Ball State University. Police are investigating a third incident off campus at IU Bloomington.
Every student at Ball State received an email or text about the alleged assault on August 25th, the day the incident was reported.
Ball State University Police are investigating the attack, which happened on the women's floor of a campus apartment building.
Although investigators will not release the circumstances surrounding the attack to protect the victim, they do want students to know about it so they are alert.
Also, campus police at IUPUI are dealing with the same type of investigation. A female student reported being attacked inside a dorm on Limestone Street.
Students say knowing about attacks helps them not to take their own safety for granted.
"I really appreciate that I live on a campus that makes it well known that these things do happen and there are ways to prevent it. It was really helpful that they are going to put that information out just so people know," said Sydney Shoultz, a freshman at Ball state. "I feel very safe on campus."
"I like to keep my phone ready in case I need to call 911 really quickly. Sometimes if it's really late I like to be on the phone with my mom, just to be like, 'Hey, I am walking, I'm safe.' That's kind of the steps I take to keep safe," said Katie Dover, IUPUI.
Since details of the investigation at Ball State and the IUPUI attack are confidential, no details are being provided about the suspects.
Students are being told to stay alert and report suspicious behavior - and any suspicious people on campus.
