Baby surrendered at Fishers Safe Haven box

The infant was dropped off at Station 397 on 136th Street. The baby has been turned over to Child and Family Services.

FISHERS, Ind. — A newborn is reportedly safe and healthy after being surrendered at a Safe Haven box in Fishers, Indiana.

The Fishers Fire and Emergency Services recovered the baby immediately.

The box was at Station 397 on East 136th Street.

The baby was legally surrendered under Indiana's Safe Surrender Law. That allows for the anonymous surrender of infants under 30 days old without prosecution.

In a statement on Facebook, the Fishers Fire Department said "Upon receiving the surrendered infant, our firefighters from Station 397 acted swiftly and provided the necessary medical attention and care. The baby is now under the watchful care of Children and Family Services, ensuring the highest standards of health and safety."

How do Safe Haven boxes work?

The baby boxes and the Safe Haven hotline have helped Hoosier moms in need surrender dozens of newborns since 2016.

These are boxes, under Indiana's Safe Haven Law, that allow a mother in crisis to anonymously and safely surrender her unharmed, unwanted newborn.

They're usually located outside fire stations or hospitals.

The baby must be 30 days old or younger. And the boxes are like incubators, with heating and cooling features.

An alarm notifies 911 as soon as a baby is placed inside, so that first responders can take the child to a hospital.
