AVON, Ind. — The United States Marine Corps announced the passing of an Avon 26-year-old who was killed while training others.
On July 27, U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Jerry L. Betzold was helping with training exercises when a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV or "Humvee") rolled over with him inside. He died the next day in a local hospital.
"Staff Sergeant Jerry Betzold represents all that is good and pure in our nation and Corps," said Col. David Hart, TTEGG Director. "He tragically lost his life while working to ensure our combat formations remain ready when the nation needs them."
Sgt. Betzold joined the Marine Corps on Aug. 15, 2016 when he was trained as an infantry Marine. He was later promoted to staff sergeant this year on March 1.
"His loss is deeply felt across our Marine Corps family. Our hearts and full support will remain with his family and friends as we all navigate this extremely difficult time," Hart said.
During his service, Sgt. Betzold several decorations including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
