INDIANAPOLIS — A deadly drunk driving crash on the southwest side of Indianapolis left one man dead and four others injured early Saturday morning.
The incident happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. July 6 in the 1200 block of Reisner Street, near Morris and Harding streets. IMPD confirmed at least one person was killed in the crash.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 19-year-old Edras Enrique Hernandez.
Investigators believe a man, who is suspected of drunk driving, was traveling north on South Reisner Street at a high rate of speed, estimated by witnesses to be around 90 mph. The driver crashed into a second vehicle, injuring a pregnant woman who was driving and two children in her car.
The woman was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where police described her condition as "stable." The children were taken to Riley Hospital, one in "very critical condition," according to police. The other child's condition was also described as "stable" by an IMPD spokesperson.
"Knowing that people were seriously hurt, it does shake you a little bit," Robert Ferguson said.
Ferguson was not home at the time of the crash, but his security camera captured it. He told 13News, if his car was parked in the front of his house, it would have been totaled.
A male passenger in the suspect vehicle was ejected from the car and found in a ditch nearby. He died at the scene, police said. Investigators do not believe he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
According to police, the driver was taken into custody at the scene after fighting with officers. Police said the suspect is not cooperating with the investigation.
Officers at the scene said in addition to the two vehicles involved in the crash, six other vehicles along Reisner Street were struck.
Police at the scene said the crash is a tragic reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving.
"Holiday weekend, if you're going to drink, don't drive. There's many other ways to make it home. Obviously, a taxi cab or Uber or Lyft, call a friend, that type of thing," IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer said.
Ferguson agrees, saying this should serve as a reminder that drunk driving impacts so many lives.
"It's not OK, even a little bit is not justifiable," Ferguson said. "You may get away with it a couple of times, but something like this can happen to anybody."
Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to call IMPD Det. Red Anderson at 317-327-6485 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS to remain anonymous.
