Man killed after car crashes into tree, catches fire on Indy's east side

The crash happened in the 4200 block of East Washington Street, near Emerson Avenue, around 10:30 a.m. Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a man was killed in a fiery crash on Indianapolis' east side Friday morning.

The crash was reported around 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 4200 block of East Washington Street, near Emerson Avenue. Officers arrived to find an eastbound car had traveled off the road and crashed into a tree before becoming engulfed in flames with the driver still inside.

Bystanders were attempting to put out the flames when officers arrived, an IMPD spokesperson said.

Medics pronounced the driver and sole occupant of the car dead at the scene after the fire was extinguished.

No other cars were involved in the crash, and no other injuries were reported.

IMPD fatal crash investigators are now looking into the cause of the incident. Preliminarily, they believe speed may have been a factor in the crash.

The department said in a social media post that both directions of East Washington Street will be closed between Gladstone and Colorado avenues for several hours Friday.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
