INDIANAPOLIS — Central Indiana is off to a cold start to the winter, with another blast of arctic air arriving Wednesday night.
Between the cold blast and rising energy bills, many Hoosiers are looking for ways to stay warm without seeing a big increase in their utility bills.
AES Indiana says there are some ways to keep costs down.
First, they say, to clean your furnace air filters and vacuum vents regularly. Accumulating dust and dirt can block air flow, making the furnace work harder, and using more energy.
AES also suggests turning the thermostat down about 8 degrees when you are away from home or sleeping. That will reduce the energy load on the furnace.
AES also says setting the thermostat to a higher temperature is not an efficient way to heat your home faster.
“That actually won’t heat your home any faster,” says Mallory Duncan from AES Indiana. “It runs your system longer than necessary, which increases those energy costs.”
AES also urges people to prepare for severe weather by having a storm kit ready and creating an emergency plan.
There are programs available to help those struggling to pay their utility bills this winter. Applications are open now for the Energy Assistance Program.
Indiana also has a Winter Disconnection Moratorium for those who meet certain requirements. You can reach out to your local housing authority or call 211 for more information on assistance programs.
