INDIANAPOLIS — As temperatures begin to drop, the need to keep the homeless warm is important to 8-year-old Malik Ford.
When given a school project about what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said, "I want to feed the homeless."
Malik then brought the idea to his family, who helped him set up his nonprofit, Malik's Blankets for the Homeless. The first Saturday of every month, he can be found in front of Central Library, handing out hot meals and blankets to people who are homeless.
"For him to have so much compassion for the homeless population in the city of Indianapolis, it just touched me and made me want to cry," Malik's godfather, David Chaney, said.
Malik has not let anything stop him from helping people who are homeless. Malik's mother cooks the meals, while Chaney helps him set up the donations.
In 2022, they gave out around 100 blankets. Malik wants to give more this year.
"I'm 8, I'm autistic and I started all this," Malik said. "I am just doing God's work."
If you want to donate new blankets, those can be dropped off at Brookside Community Church or donate to their GoFundMe.
