DELPHI, Indiana — A 74-year-old man was found dead after a house fire in Delphi Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 3:45 p.m. July 2 in the 1200 block of Smith Avenue, near West North Washington and North 9th streets on the north side of the city.

Responding crews were told someone was trapped inside and found flames coming from the home when they arrived. A neighbor, Delphi firefighters and Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to rescue the person but were not able, the sheriff's office said.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators found the victim, identified by the coroner's office as 74-year-old Don R. Alderman, inside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy will be performed at a later date.

The neighbor was airlifted to a hospital due to smoke inhalation, the sheriff's office said, adding her condition was not known.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
