IFD: 67-year-old man dead after small fire at south Indianapolis apartment

The Indianapolis Fire Department says the primary cause of the fire was "improper use of smoking materials."

INDIANAPOLIS — A man has died following a fire inside his apartment on Indy's south side Sunday afternoon.

According to a release from the Indianapolis Fire Department, around 12:46 p.m. on Oct. 13, firefighters were dispatched to the Crestwood Village South apartments located in the 8800 block of Madison Avenue on a report of a fire.

The manager of the apartment complex reportedly forced entry into the apartment after hearing the smoke alarm but not getting any response from the resident inside. The manager and another worker at the apartment complex put a small fire out using a fire extinguisher, but told firefighters they found the 67-year-old resident unresponsive.

The man was found around 12:59 p.m. and was later pronounced dead. IFD says the fire was started by "improper use of smoking materials." The man's cause of death is pending and will be determined by the Marion County Coroner.

No other residents of the apartment were affected.

IFD says this is the fifth fire fatality in the service district this year.
