65-year-old man suffers minor injuries after crashing into creek on Indy's north side

The crash was reported around 5:45 p.m. Sunday near West 79th and North Meridian streets.

INDIANAPOLIS — A 65-year-old man is recovering after crashing into a creek Sunday afternoon on the north side of Indianapolis.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, shortly after 5:45 p.m. July 14, first responders were called to the area of West 79th and North Meridian streets on a report of a crash with entrapment.

IFD said its preliminary investigation shows the man was driving an SUV southbound on Meridian Street when, for an unknown reason, the SUV left the road just north of 79th Street. The SUV then plowed through 500 feet of woods and bushes before plunging into a creek.

First responders were able to reach the man, who was briefly trapped in the SUV. IFD said firefighters had a basket and were able to float the man out of the water using it.

According to IFD, the man may have a cut on his hand but was otherwise largely unhurt in the crash. However, he was taken to an area hospital to be checked out.
