RICHMOND, Ind. — Five people were hospitalized, including two children, after a serious crash in Richmond Sunday morning.
The Richmond Police Department said officers were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and 16th Street following reports of a multi-vehicle crash around 9 a.m. Oct. 13.
The crash involved three vehicles, with one overturned and occupants trapped inside. Police said the three vehicles were a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, a 2020 Jeep Compass and an orange Honda Element.
Police said a preliminary investigation showed the Chevrolet was headed westbound on U.S. Highway 40 at an "excessive speed." The vehicle ended up hitting the Honda from behind, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and 17th Street.
Police said the impact caused the Honda to spin and crash into the Jeep that was in the right lane. This caused the Jeep to drive off the road and hit a building in the 1600 block of U.S. 40 East, while the Honda was overturned on the driver's side of the road. The Chevrolet then spun and hit a different building in the 1600 block of U.S. 40 East.
All three drivers were injured during the incident. Two children, who police believe were riding in the Honda, were also injured. They were all taken to a local hospital and are expected to survive.
The Richmond Police Department said preliminary indications show the driver of the Chevrolet was "possibly intoxicated" at the time of the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
