41-year-old inmate dies at Marion County Adult Detention Center

Deputies said 41-year-old Carlos Lagunes-Fraceschy was found unresponsive around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. He was pronounced dead 25 minutes later.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Sheriff's Office confirmed an inmate in the infirmary of the Adult Detention Center died Wednesday morning.

According to the sheriff's office, 41-year-old Carlos Lagunes-Fraceschy was found unresponsive around 10:15 a.m. Aug. 28.

On-site medical staff attempted life-saving efforts until 10:40 a.m., when Lagunes-Fraceschy was pronounced dead. The Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed his identity Aug. 30.

The sheriff's office said Lagunes-Fraceschy requested to be moved to the infirmary the night before due to stomach pain. He was then treated and placed in a single-bed infirmary observation cell.

According to the sheriff's office, medics checked on Lagunes-Fraceschy around 9 a.m. Wednesday and said he was responsive at that time. He was checked on again at 10:15 a.m., which is when he was found unresponsive.

The sheriff's office said Lagunes-Fraceschy's autopsy did not reveal any signs of foul play and that he died of natural causes.

"It is believed that an underlying, undetected condition is responsible for Mr. Lagunes-Fraceschy's death," the sheriff's office said.

The toxicology report is still pending.

Seven days before Lagunes-Fraceschy's death at the jail, another inmate, 27-year-old Bailey Scott Lyle, was found unresponsive in the jail and pronounced dead 45 minutes later.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office released the following statement on the two men's deaths:

"As is standard procedure to ensure transparency and accountability, Mr. Lyle’s and Mr. Lagunes-Fraceschy’s deaths are being independently investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Forensic Services Agency, the Marion County Coroner’s Office and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) ADC stands as Indiana’s largest mental health institution, dedicated to serving some of the state’s most vulnerable populations. The MCSO and its staff remain committed to delivering comprehensive, around-the-clock care to the county’s highest-risk individuals."

According to the sheriff's office, Lagunes-Fraceschy had previously been in custody in Marion County on three occasions since 2018. He was currently facing charges of possession of methamphetamine, false identity statement, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
