GARRETT, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating a crash on Interstate 69 just north of Fort Wayne that claimed the life of an Indianapolis woman.
According to a release from ISP, around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, police responded to a reported crash at the 326 mile-marker on I-69, which is near the County Road 11A interchange.
A preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Ford Edge was being driven by 22-year-old Mia Stevens of Indianapolis along northbound I-69. Traffic was stopped in both lanes while crews performed bridge work.
Investigators believe that Stevens did not notice the stopped traffic in time and swerved into a semi truck that was parked in the right lane. Police say they believe Stevens was traveling at highway speed at the time of the crash.
A passenger in Stevens' car was also injured. Police say another 22-year-old woman, also from Indianapolis, was critically injured and was transported to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Police say they do not have an updated condition.
The driver of the semi, a 44-year-old from Michigan, was uninjured.
Northbound lanes of I-69 were completely shut down for roughly three hours for the crash investigation. Police say the investigation is still active.
