TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — Two people were killed in a head-on crash in Tippecanoe County Monday afternoon.

According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened just before 5 p.m. Sept. 9 on West County Road 800 South near West Point, Indiana. The location is about 15 miles southwest of Lafayette.

Investigators say a westbound Chevy Blazer crossed the center line, striking a Toyota Prius, which was traveling east on West County Road 800 South. The Blazer flipped and came to a stop on the road, while the Prius was forced into a nearby cornfield.

The drivers of both vehicles, who were the only occupants, police said, were killed in the crash.

On Sept. 10, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello identified the driver of the Prius as 46-year-old Mihai Murineanu, of Crawfordsville, and the driver of the Blazer as 28-year-old Nathanial Phipps, of Covington.

The cause of death for both drivers was listed by the coroner as "blunt force injuries."

The crash remains under investigation.

"Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the families, and we hope they are respected during such a difficult time," Costello said.
