Shooting leaves 1 person dead on Indy's northeast side

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one person dead on Indy's northeast side Sunday morning.

Around 8 a.m., IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 3600 block of East 39th Street, near North Sherman Drive and 38th Street.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male who had been shot. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Neighbors tell 13News they believe the victim was shot the night before, when people were outside setting off fireworks.

"The fireworks went boom and that's all I heardt at first, then I heard gunshots, it was scary," Kimberly Kelly said.

Right now, investigators are working to determine exactly when the shooting happened.

"We have to have the community's help whenever we have these types of investigations," said IMPD Officer William Young. "Obviously this community is devasted with something like this happening,"
