TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — A person is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Tippecanoe County early Wednesday morning.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash in the 5100 block of Jackson Highway in West Lafayette around 3:30 a.m.  Oct. 2.

Police said the driver, who was the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary investigation indicates a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling westbound on Jackson Highway at a high rate of speed. The driver didn't see the curve and drove off the right side of the road, hitting two utility poles and a fence. The Pontiac came to a stop in the ditch area.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released.

The road was closed for five hours while authorities conducted the investigation and replaced the utility poles.

The Wabash Township Fire Department, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office responded to the crash. The crash is still under investigation.
