Indianapolis sax player "Pookie" Johnson dies

Indianapolis, September 5 - Jazz saxophonist Alonzo "Pookie" Johnson, who played with jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, has died. He was 77.

Johnson died Saturday at Methodist Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Penny Johnson confirmed.

The Indianapolis native was part of the city's jazz scene in the 1950s when nightclubs on Indiana Avenue drew musicians and jazz and blues fans from Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville and other
cities.

More recently, he had performed with the Hampton Sisters and at the annual Indy Jazz Fest.
