INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - American soldiers at a base in Afghanistan are trying to help another ailing Afghan child. That's hours after a 16-month-old Afghan boy died inexplicably at a refugee camp near Kabul. Qudrat Wardak had underwent heart surgery in Indiana.
Abdul Qaher first brought his four-year son, Zia Urrahman, to Camp Phoneix last fall. He hopes Zia can get medical care at Saint Joseph in Fort Wayne for horrible burns he suffered in a propane tank explosion eight months ago.
Zia's life isn't in danger, but without plastic surgery his left arm won't grow normally.
Indiana Guardsman Captain Brad Boyle, from Decatur, Indiana, and others have already raised more than 18-thousand dollars. And a plastic surgeon has committed to treat Zia, who has been granted a medical visa. But Boyle says he has not yet been able to get one for the boy's father.
