WORCESTER, Mass. (WBTS) - A Massachusetts Walmart had to be shut down after nearly two dozen employees tested positive for coronavirus.

The store was closed by an emergency order of the city of Worcester, Massachusetts.

The city manager said 23 employees of the store tested positive for COVID-19 over the past three-and-a-half weeks.

The store will have to remain closed until it can be professionally cleaned. Authorities say all 400 employees will have to be tested or in some cases re-tested.

"I think it's the safest thing for the community to have that supermarket closed down until we're sure that people aren't put at risk by shopping there," Worchester Medical Director Dr. Michael Hirsh told WBTS.

It is not clear exactly when the store will reopen, nor is it clear whether employees will be paid while the store is closed.
