INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — As more cases of coronavirus are confirmed in the state, the question remains: will sporting events be impacted?
The first big event in Indianapolis is the Horizon League Basketball Championships at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. And as of now, the event is a go.
"Indiana Sports Corp, it's partners, and host venues are meeting regularly to assess conditions," Indiana Sports Corp. said in a statement. "We will continue to work closely with an implement guidance from the Marion County Health Department and Indiana State Department of Health regarding the prevention and spread of novel coronavirus. We will provide updated information as needed."
The Butler Bulldogs are getting ready to take their show on the road in the Big East tournament.
Butler Coach LaVall Jordan said he's monitoring the situation.
"Paying attention to the area where we are traveling, so that we are all safe. As safe as we can be. You can't control everything," he said.
That was the philosophy of fans at the Coliseum watching the IUPUI women won on Monday in the Horizon League semifinals.
"It didn't bother me," Kevin Merryman said referring to being in a crowd of people. "Everything is clean in there. I don't see any issues."
Students said they felt OK about attending the event and weren't worried.
The fairgrounds and event center have offered several hand-washing locations in addition to hand sanitizing stations around its venues.
"We regularly clean surfaces and items touched often by guests and team members," a spokesperson for the fairgrounds said in a statement.
As organizations and businesses continue to monitor the situation, it seems some fans do not see a threat and will continue to show up for their teams until told otherwise.
