INDIANAPOLIS — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The chance that any woman will die from breast cancer is about 1 in 40.
In the United States in 2021, 272,454 new breast cancers were reported in females. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reports that in 2022, 42,211 females died from breast cancer.
Early detection is key, and that begins with regular checkups, mammograms and self exams.
It is also important to know factors that could lead to an increased risk, which include age, being overweight or obese after menopause, drinking alcohol and taking menopausal hormone therapy. Smoking may also be linked to an increased risk.
Family history and genetics are also contributing factors to be aware of when assessing risk.
