New COVID-19 cases in Johnson, Howard counties bring Indiana total to 10

Indiana now has 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indiana now has 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

As of late Tuesday night, three more cases had been confirmed — three in Johnson County and one in Howard County. All four new patients are adults, but ISDH did not share any other details about the cases.

"ISDH cannot provide any additional information about the individuals at this time due to privacy laws," the agency said in a statement to WTHR.

ISDH reports 43 people total have been tested by them and the CDC.

Franklin Community Schools released a statement Wednesday that said none of the Johnson County cases are connected to the school system.

"FCS will continue to rely on the expertise of state and local health officials and will communicate factual information as we receive it," the statement said.

Tuesday, the district released guidance for how schools will work to minimize exposure to the coronavirus and the flu:

  • Students with a temperature of 100.0 or higher or those who are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, such as cough, wheezing, or shortness of breath will be sent home from school. Please keep your student home until they are symptom and fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
  • Teachers and staff are continually encouraging students to thoroughly wash hands.
  • The district has postponed and/or canceled field trips, convocations, PTO carnivals, reading nights, and clubs led by external volunteers, such as Bible Club and Study Connection.
  • The district has suspended non/school-sponsored team practices/events (ex., AAU, Regional club sports, FYB, etc.)
  • All external events in the Franklin Performing Arts Center will be canceled or postponed.

The district also canceled or postponed multiple events to minimize potential spread:

  • Kindergarten Registration will be postponed. Information will be shared with parents once this has been rescheduled.
  • Middle School band and choir ISSMA has been canceled.
  • Franklin Community Middle School will no longer host the Mid State Conference Wrestling Meet.
  • Franklin Community High School Spring Band Concert will be rescheduled.
  • Financial Aid Night at the high school has been postponed.
  • Riley Dance Marathon has been canceled.
  • Google Summit has been canceled.

The Howard County Health Department (HCHD) said the COVID-19 patient there is hospitalized. The department is working with the state health department to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the virus through the infected patient. The HCHD said risk to the public is believed to be low.

Tuesday, ISDH confirmed two cases, one each in Adams and Boone counties.
