INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Public Health Department is hosting a World AIDS Day awareness event on Friday, Dec. 1.

The event will run from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at 1650 N. College Ave. in Indianapolis.

“Health and Wellness for All” will offer free HIV and STI rapid testing, free health screenings, free flu shots and COVID-19 vaccine, and educational information.

World AIDS Day encourages people to unite globally to eliminate the disparities and inequities that create barriers to HIV testing, prevention and access to HIV care. It also recognizes the millions worldwide that have died from AIDS-related illness.

The department reports, as of September 2022, more than 5,300 people were living with HIV in Marion County. Of the new HIV diagnoses in Marion County in 2022, 16% were Latino, 20% were White, and 60% were Black.

The health department said science shows people living with HIV and on medication and virally suppressed cannot transmit HIV sexually.

People with questions about HIV and resources can reach out to the Marion County Public Health Department’s Ryan White/HIV Services Program at 317-221-3000 or Substance Use Outreach Services at 317-221-4753.
