INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis now has another Safe Haven Baby Box, where mothers in crisis can safely surrender their newborn.
The newest box was installed at Franciscan Health on the south side of Indianapolis last week. The box is in a discreet location outside Entrance Door #2 at the Center for Women and Children at 8111 S. Emerson Ave.
Franciscan Health said the box was made possible by the generosity of Indianapolis residents Nanci and Carney Likens, "who wanted to pay it forward for all the help they have received from the team at Franciscan Health over the years."
When a newborn is placed into the box, a silent alarm alerts staff to respond and help the baby.
Indiana's Safe Haven Law allows moms in crisis to give up an unwanted infant without fear of prosecution.
There are now more than 200 Safe Haven Baby Boxes across the United States, including 126 in Indiana.
