(WTHR) — There continues to be a concern about the growing number of major food recalls.
From 2013 to last year, there were 10 percent more recalls. The FDA and CDC says this is because of better detection, not worse.
But the Public Interest Research Group says there is more that can be done to keep food safe.
According to the group, meat production is mainly self-regulated and produce growers don't have to check their irrigation for bacteria.
There's also no system to warn people they may have bought bad food.
The CDC estimates that germs in food make 48 million Americans sick each year, which is one out of six people.
