INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Do you wash your chicken when you pull it out of the package before cooking it? The CDC learned it's a hot debate after posting a seemingly helpful kitchen tip.

"Don't wash your raw chicken!" the agency tweeted Friday. "Washing can spread germs from the chicken to other food or utensils in the kitchen."

While it seemed like good advice, as it turns out, many people passionately disagreed.

Washing meat has been a longstanding practice in many families — one that seems to be a non-negotiable tradition regardless of what the government's health protection agency says.

After all the responses, the CDC sent another tweet emphasizing their point: "Kill germs by cooking chicken thoroughly, not washing it. You shouldn't wash any poultry, meat, or eggs before cooking. They can all spread germs around your kitchen."
