INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Diabetes impacts millions of people and many aren't even aware they have it.
March 27 is National Diabetes Alert Day, and experts hope it brings attention to some of the risk factors and how to better protect yourself and your family.
There are 1.5 million people who are diagnosed with diabetes each year. More than 7 million are undiagnosed. One in three adults are at risk of diabetes.
David Miller with the Community Health Network says there are several signs that someone may have diabetes without knowing it.
Increased thirst, increased urination, and general tiredness are symptoms of diabetes that may be overlooked.
Those 7 million people who have diabetes and don't know about it may be causing damage to the eyes and kidneys.
There are tests to help you know your risk factors, but some things, like age and gender, you have no control over. Miller suggests focusing on things like regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight as ways to lower your diabetes risk.
When it comes to food, Miller says serving size and carbohydrates content are two important things you'll want to look for. He says women typically need three carb options per men, while men need four to five, but it's best to see a dietitian to personalize your needs.
Community North is offering free testing today until 10 a.m. to know your risk factors.
Community Health Network also hosts a two-part outpatient diabetes education course. Click here to see the details on when the series is offered.
