INDIANAPOLIS — More Hoosier help is needed to help keep Indy's homeless population safe during the coronavirus pandemic. The folks at Wheeler Mission in downtown Indianapolis and at the Bloomington, Indiana location told 13News COVID-19 has only increased the number of people who need help.
The nonprofit organization is reaching out to local residents via email to ask for support. The summer months are even more challenging because donations typically dwindle this time of year, but hunger and homelessness are up due to COVID-19. It costs only $2.03 per meal to feed someone at Wheeler.
But keeping the homeless safe during the pandemic also costs money, and Wheeler Executive Vice President of Advancement Steve Kerr spoke with 13News about the best way people can help them help the homeless right now.
"The White House has named Indianapolis a hot spot released a few minutes ago so the need for PPE at Wheeler and the homeless is going to continue to skyrocket," Kerr said. "An online gift can help us tremendously and no amount is too small."
