Avon High School staff member tests positive for COVID-19

The district said the staff member hadn't been in the school this week and hasn't had contact with other employees or students.

AVON, Ind. — A staff member at Avon High School tested positive for COVID-19, however the district said that staff member has not been at the school this week.

A spokesperson for Avon Schools confirmed the positive test to 13News Thursday night. The district learned of the test on Thursday and said not only had the staff member not been in the school, they haven't had close contact with any other employee or student at the school.

The district has trained its staff on how to recognize symptoms of coronavirus and have set guidelines for when an individual who tests positive for the virus can return to school. That includes going 72 hours without a fever, while not taking fever-reducing medication, an improvement in other symptoms of the virus, including cough and shortness of breath, and that at least 10 calendar days have passed since the individual first experienced symptoms of the virus.

The school district provided no further information about the case, citing privacy laws.

Avon started school on Wednesday.

In Greenfield Thursday, administrators were notified that a student at the district's junior high school had tested positive for COVID-19 on the first day of classes.
