INDIANAPOLIS — Less than 6% of doctors in the U.S. are Black, and experts say it's impacting public health.
One hospital in Indianapolis is helping Black students learn more about the field.
Community Health Network is hosting its second annual Black Men in White Coats event.
Students will get their own white coat and stethoscope this year before breaking into group sessions, getting hands-on experience of working in health care and hearing from doctors at Community Health.
Leaders say so far, more than 300 students have registered.
"If I can do it, certainly anyone can do it and that it's not unattainable and that it doesn't matter where you live, where you're from, as long as you're shown the opportunity, that you can take advantage of it and that you can give back to your community and do good as well," said Keith Banks, physician at Community Health Network.
The event is Saturday, Oct. 28 from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lawrence Central High School.
