Indianapolis - Family and friends gathered at St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown Indianapolis Tuesday for the funeral of Alberto Covarrubias.

Pallbearers brought in the coffin carrying Covarrubias's body just after noon, and an entourage walked to the front of the sanctuary. Two of Covarrubias' children participated in the mass.

The prayer of St. Francis was read at the funeral.  Included in the prayer are the words, "Make me an instrument of your peace." One family member says she forgives the men who killed Alberto Covarrubias and six of his family members.

St. Mary's was the family's home church.

Alberto Covarrubias, 56, Emma Valdez, 46, Flora Albarran, 22, Luis Albarran, 5, Magno Albarran, 29, Alberto Covarrubias, 11, and David Covarrubias, 8, were found murdered execution-style in their east side home on Hamilton Avenue last week. Police say the crime began as a robbery and ended as a murder. Desmond Turner and James Stewart have been arrested on charges in connection with the worst slayings in Indianapolis in decades.

Alberto Covarrubias was laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.

The rest of the family will have their funeral mass at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral on North Meridian Street at 11:00 am Wednesday. They will be buried in Mexico.
