FISHERS, Ind. — Fishers High School has canceled football practice for the rest of the week after a player tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement, the district said it couldn’t share specific details about the student or the exposure but advised families to monitor their student-athletes for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.
“Following the IHSAA guidelines, the team has been practicing in small training groups. Those that practiced in the shared group with the exposure are working with Fishers Health Department on next steps for possible testing/quarantining,” Emily Abbot, director of school and community relations, said in the statement.
Other sports have not been canceled at the school. But like football, players have been taking measures to protect themselves.
“When we enter [the field], we have to wear masks, and then … on water breaks, we’re social distancing,” said Luke Gabbard, a freshman soccer player.
Teams have also been practicing in smaller groups.
Gabbard said he’s not bothered by the extra precautions and said he feels safe.
“I’m just happy to be able to be back out here and start playing again,” he said.
Athletic Director Rob Seymour said students are not required to be tested before they play, but the school is following all IHSAA rules, as well as guidance from local and state health departments.
He added that much like the plan for schools to reopen this fall, the plan for student athletics is a fluid one.
“We’re looking at what we can maybe do different to just add in layers of safety,” he said. “The x’s and o’s are not what’s important right now. It’s safety ... keeping everyone safe.”
The football team is planning to return to practice next week except for the student who tested positive and any athlete who may have been in close contact.
