(NBC News) - Music legend Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature Thursday.
The 75-year-old was cited for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
The honor includes a prize of $927,740.
Bod Dylan was born on May 24, 1941 as Robert Allen Zimmerman.
He penned many influential songs of the 1960s, including "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues."
Dylan will receive the Nobel Prize award Dec. 10.
