INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Gospel singer Sandi Patty has tested positive for COVID-19, she announced on social media.

The former Anderson, Indiana resident said she hadn't felt well for a couple weeks while out on tour and got off the road March 7-8. She returned to her Oklahoma City home before having a test for COVID-19 that came back positive on Tuesday.

Patty said she thankfully had been staying at home with her husband, Don, instead of her normal routine of working with parishioners at Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City.

In a video posted to Facebook, Patty used her diagnosis to send a message to others about the pandemic.

"This is not fake news, this is real. This is everything they say it is and we've just got to take it seriously," she said.

Part of that message includes being aware and practicing social distancing.

"Do your part. That's all we can do," she said. "(God) has given us faith, but He has also given us wisdom. So use that wisdom."

A member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Patty has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and sang the national anthem before the Indianapolis 500. She ha also authored seven books.

She moved to Anderson while attending Anderson University (then known as Anderson College) before moving to Oklahoma City about a decade ago.
