Actress Margaret Whitton has passed away at the age of 67, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Whitton died peacefully at her home in Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday after a brief battle with cancer, according to her friend and producing partner Steven Tabakin.
Whitton will best be remembered for playing the Las Vegas showgirl-turned owner of the Cleveland Indians, Rachel Phelps in 1989's 'Major League.' Phelps was determined for the Tribe to finish last so she could move the club to Miami.
When Phelps' sinister plan is made known to the Indians players and coaches, the team goes on a tear and eventually wins the American League East in a one-game playoff with the Yankees.
In addition to Major League and its 1994 sequel, Whitton also appeared in 9 1/2 Weeks (1986), opposite Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger; The Secret of My Success (1987) with Michael J. Fox, whom she tries to seduce in the movie; Ironweed (1987), as a Gay Nineties temptress opposite Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep; and The Man Without a Face (1993), with Mel Gibson.
