INDIANAPOLIS — The superintendent of Washington Township Schools has announced her retirement.

Dr. Nikki Woodson announced Friday she will retire at the end of the next school year, which will be her 14th leading the district.

“It is with heart-filled gratitude that I announce my retirement from WTS for June 30, 2025," Woodson said. "I have been proud to serve WTS since 2009 and since 2011 as Superintendent."

Woodson replaced Dr. James Mervilde after his retirement in 2011. Prior to that, she served as assistant superintendent, among other positions in the district.

Among the achievements during her time as superintendent, Woodson pointed to a double-digit increase in graduation rate and passing two major referendums, in addition to leading the district through the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It certainly has been an extraordinary journey and I am thankful for the incredible staff, students, and supportive community that make success in WTS possible," she said.

Woodson graduated from Ball State University, then earned a master's degree from Butler University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University. She has earned numerous honors during her professional career and served on several boards across central Indiana.

"WTS and the entire Washington Township community congratulate Dr. Woodson on her retirement and thank her for giving well over a decade of professional service to our students, staff, and community," School Board President Deirdre George Davis said.

The school board expects to post the position soon and conduct a thorough search and transition for the new superintendent over the next year leading up to Woodson's retirement.
