LAWRENCE, Ind. — The Lawrence Township School District has announced weapon detection systems will be installed inside all of the middle and high schools. The district already does random weapon checks at large events and in the schools, but these detectors will be used every day.
The district says all students and visitors will be required to pass through the detectors while school administrators or security guards will oversee the system. Some parents in the district are already pleased with this new addition.
"For me this is a safety precaution, it makes me feel safe as a parent that my kids are going to school, and they are not running the risk of someone bringing a weapon into the school," Julie Minder said.
The installation comes a month after two teenagers were arrested in connection to gunshots being fired outside of Lawrence Central during a basketball game against Lawrence North. Minder said she's thankful for the district's quick response after this to keep students safe.
"Not everybody is going to agree with us, not everybody is going to agree with the school district but the fact they are implementing it so quickly tells us the district and superintendent and school board actually care about our kids and not letting it go wayside," she said.
The district will unveil the new system on Friday, Feb. 2nd.
