IPS teachers could soon get pay raise and more time off

Top teacher salaries would go from $90,000 to $94,000 a year, about a 3% increase.

INDIANAPOLIS — IPS teachers could soon get a pay raise and more time off.

According to a tentative contract agreement between the school board and the union, starting salaries next year would go from $50,400 to $51,900.

Top teacher salaries would go from $90,000 to $94,000 a year. That's about a 3% increase.

The tentative contract would also offer increases for those positions in high demand, like school psychologists, social workers, special education teachers, English as a new language teachers and STEM. They would get a little more than $500 each year.

Amelia Pak-Harvey covers education for the nonprofit news site, Chalkbeat Indiana. She said a starting salary of $50,000 is competitive for other districts to keep up with.

"The district has been really cognizant on making sure that it retains that staff as it goes through all these changes, the school closures, the mergers, the new programming that's going to be enacted next year and keeping that staff within IPS has been top of mind," Pak-Harvey said.

According to Chalkbeat, teachers would also get more paid time off during the school year, in addition to floating holidays and more bereavement days.

The board will vote on the contract next week.
