Concerns raised over Hamilton Southeastern Schools contracts

Some were upset because the board voted to renew only some of the two-year contracts in the district.

FISHERS, Ind. — Teachers at Hamilton Southeastern Schools might be on summer vacation, but those who attended Wednesday night's school board meeting said the last 36 hours have been frustrating.

"The last couple days, we saw you mess around with people's livelihoods, like their jobs, like how they pay their bills by continually making changes to board docs, to which contracts you will renew with several still in limbo," one educator told the board.

They were upset because the district voted to renew only some of the two-year contracts in the district.

"Some of those positions are the assistant superintendent of staff and student services, the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, the CFO and chief operations officer. Those are four important jobs and are the only ones that can talk about the referendum," said Abby Taylor, president of Hamilton Southeastern Education Association.

They said Wednesday's decisions sends a message that their positions aren't valued.

"I'm not thrilled with the idea of guaranteeing people two years out. I have no idea what the future holds," board member Ben Orr said.

"The perception that was relayed to the public is that we were not renewing contracts, but that's not the case," board member Dawn Lang said. "We are seeking to postpone and table it."

The educators asked the board to consider what's best for the students, no matter the message.

The board said they hope to revisit those contracts in a future consent agenda.
