ANDERSON, Ind. — Parents in Anderson have a new way to challenge books they believe are obscene or harmful to minors.
According to our partners at The Herald Bulletin, the Anderson school board is now requiring all schools to create a comprehensive list of library, classroom and media materials.
Parents and community leaders can request removal of listed materials and, if there is a dispute, a committee will review the content and make a recommendation to the principal.
There is also an appeals process.
The new procedures follow a new Indiana law that allows selective book banning to protect young people.
"This is mandated by the General Assembly," school board attorney Charles Rubright said. "We have to adopt some policy. If not, ACS will be criticized in terms of the action taken by the General Assembly."
