Woman injured in shooting at Cumberland apartment complex; police arrest other woman for attempted murder

Officers responded to the 11000 block of Dunshire Drive, near East Washington and North Muessing streets, around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

CUMBERLAND, Ind. — Police in Cumberland are investigating after a woman was injured in a shooting at an apartment complex early Thursday.

Around 5:30 a.m. Oct. 26, officers responded to the 11000 block of Dunshire Drive, near East Washington and North Muessing streets in Cumberland, for a report of a person shot.

Officers located a woman who had been shot at least once in the chest, who was taken to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition, according to court documents. Police said medical staff said the woman was in "critical and unstable condition" and would likely need another surgery.

Investigators believe the incident began as an argument between the victim and another woman, who was at the house where the shooting happened. Witnesses told police a woman at the house was arguing with a woman over the phone and told her to come to the house to fight, according to the court documents.

Witnesses said there was a pounding at the front door a short time later. That's when they said the woman in their house went over to the stairs and fired at least one shot through the door.

Police have arrested a 23-year-old woman, identified by a witness as the shooter, for attempted murder.

NOTE: 13News does not name suspects until they are formally charged by the prosecutor's office.
