'I did try to kill you' | Man charged with attempted murder after shooting 10-month-old, woman while breastfeeding in east Indy

IMPD said the woman was breastfeeding her baby when they were shot early Saturday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS — A woman and her 10-month-old son are in stable condition and a suspect has been arrested after a shooting during an apparent domestic incident on the east side of Indianapolis early Saturday morning.

Jerimiah Eldridge, 21, was formally charged Tuesday, Aug. 27 with two counts of attempted murder.

The shooting happened just after midnight Aug. 24 at a home in the 6100 block of East 21st Street, near North Arlington Avenue. Dispatchers received a call about a possible person shot, then a short time later, got a report of a woman screaming for help.

According to court documents, the woman said she had broken up with the Eldridge earlier in the night via text message. This allegedly "angered" Eldridge, causing him to come to their shared home and start an argument. Documents say the argument escalated to the point where Eldridge was pointing a gun at the woman and threatening to kill her, while several children were present in the room.

IMPD says this gun was used to shoot a mother and her 10-month-old while they were breastfeeding.

The woman told police she "laughed" at Eldridge, which caused him to shoot her two to three times while she was breastfeeding her baby.

Court documents say the woman was shot in her upper left shoulder, and the child was shot in his abdomen.

The woman was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where police said her condition is stable. The baby was taken to Riley Hospital for Children. His condition was also said to be stable, but he was undergoing surgery for his wounds.

Prior to the shooting, court documents say Eldridge texted the woman and said, "I'm fin get real fvked up n come kill you." He also sent another text to the woman that said, "Baby i love you I'm so sorry I'm the police want to get me but I deserve that i did try to kill you."

Court documents indicated aggravated assault detectives arrested Eldridge after his grandfather called saying he wanted to turn himself in. He was transported to the Marion County Criminal Justice Campus.

Police later recovered the gun allegedly used in the shooting and discovered it was reported stolen from a car in November 2023.

IMPD said the Department of Child Services responded to the scene and took custody of two children who were present at the time of the shooting. DCS is also conducting a separate investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call IMPD Det. Cody Hopkins at 317-327-3475 or call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.
