Witness to Anderson police chase that killed 2 and injured 4 describes scene

Two people were killed and four others were seriously injured when a police chase that began in Pendleton ended in a deadly crash in Anderson.

ANDERSON, Ind. — Two vehicles were torn apart by a violent crash during a police chase Sunday afternoon in Anderson. Hours later there was little evidence of the impact.

In fact, if Richard Foster hadn't seen the chase himself, he might not have believed it.

"I was kind of shocked because it didn't look like a police chase to me," Foster said.

The police chase started miles away in Pendleton with the Pendleton Police Department. It crossed over into Anderson, passing Foster's home.

"I was coming out my door I heard the pickup truck coming around the corner down there. It got around here. I turned my head that way. I saw the front of the police car. About that time, I heard boom," Foster said.

A police chase ended in a crash near 19th and Jackson streets in Anderson around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 15, 2023.

The chase ended after the suspect crashed into two other vehicles, totaling all of them, killing two people in one and seriously injuring four of the six people in the other. They were taken to Anderson Hospital.

"Then all the cop cars from neighboring townships came through here and the next thing I knew there were a couple deaths," said Foster.

The suspect had only minor injuries and was taken into custody.

Police said the Madison County prosecutor will likely be filing charges.

The Anderson Police crash team is investigating the incident.

As for the question of what prompted the pursuit, Pendleton police so far haven't responded to our questions about that.

Neighbors are waiting to hear how this all started, too.

"I'm anxious to see what happened in Pendleton that resulted in a couple deaths here in Anderson. It's really sad. It's really bad. We've had a lot of deaths here lately," Foster said.
