INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating a shooting at a west Indianapolis fitness center that left two people injured Tuesday evening.
An IMPD spokesperson confirms officers were called to VASA Fitness in the 6900 block of West 38th Street, just west of Interstate 465, around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6.
According to IMPD Capt. Mark McCardia, the shooting happened just inside the front door of the facility. The gym was full of people when police arrived, he said, leading to a chaotic scene.
Witnesses said they heard two or three shots fired. Christopher Velez was inside the gym during the shooting. He told 13News when the shots rang out, people began running for cover.
"I was scared for my life, you know," Velez said. "You're never expecting none of this to happen. Not even in, you know, VASA here, you know. It's friendly around here, but it's just crazy man."
McCardia said the victims, a 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, were taken to separate hospitals for treatment. One of the victims was said to be in "good" condition, while the other had more serious injuries.
Police cleared the fitness center, but said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators do not have a good description of the shooter due to the chaotic scene. Anyone with information is asked to come forward and contact IMPD aggravated assault detectives at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
