INDIANAPOLIS — Lights could be seen shining through the windows at VASA Fitness, but a sign on the front door says the facility is closed until further notice.
And while things may return to business as usual for them, for others, Tuesday night's shooting in the 6900 block of West 38th Street, just west of Interstate 465, has changed them forever.
Medical tape and gauze cover the gunshot wound on Raul Alvarez's leg. As blood seeped through the bandage, flashbacks to when Alvarez was shot replayed through his mind.
"I got in the restroom and I feel something on my leg. And I lift my leg, like my pants, and I see the hole and started bleeding," Alvarez said.
Alvarez was one of two people shot when a suspect walked into the fitness center and opened fire around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6. It sent him and a 16-year-old to the hospital.
"I'm a little traumatized," Alvarez said. "I don't know if I can go back to that gym. It kind of sucks."
Eighteen-year-old Jonathan Carr said he was just feet away from the shooter.
"I was kind of acting without even thinking, really. I was just ... before I knew it, I was just crawling on the ground to the yoga room. And then, I was praying. Just praying the whole time," Carr said.
Next thing Carr knew, the shooter was gone and people started running toward the front door.
"There were maybe 200 people here at this point at the gym," Carr recalled. "And I got to the door when there was still, like, maybe 150 people or so. I just held the door open so people could push through."
Carr said when he looked down at his feet, there was evidence.
"I saw the bullets steaming, and that's kind of when it hit me, and I got a little choked up, and I was like, 'Wow,'" Carr said.
While people were funneling through the doors trying to leave, Alvarez was in the bathroom. Inside there were two of his friends and a complete stranger, named Tiffany, helping him.
"Pretty thankful. Pretty thankful, yeah," Alvarez said. "Thankfully, they were there."
Police are still searching for the person responsible for the shooting.
A representative from VASA Fitness' corporate team says they hope to reopen by Friday.
