Victim identified in fatal shooting inside south side Kroger store

Metro police are investigating a fatal shooting inside an Indianapolis Kroger store Friday night.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Homicide detectives have arrested Jason Cooper, 37, and preliminarily charged him with murder for the fatal shooting Friday night inside a south side Kroger store.

The shooting happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of South East St., near E. Hanna Ave. on the far south side of Indianapolis.

Police say two men got into an altercation in the store and one of the men shot the other. The victim died in the dairy aisle of the store, police said. Monday morning, the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 43-year-old Carlos Castro.

The shooter, later identified as Cooper, fled from the store and carjacked a customer in the parking lot, fleeing south on U.S. 31 toward Greenwood. Police pursued the suspect a short distance until he bailed from the stolen vehicle near Stop 11 Road.

The suspect was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

A store clerk said he heard four shots total as he ran out of the store. He described the scene as "frantic," with shoppers dropping their groceries as they fled.

"It was a tough scene," Craig Edwards said.

"I heard two shots and I thought something dropped and then I two more and everybody said "Run! Run! There's shooting!" said a woman who was inside the store. "Then some guy came out and he was still shootin' and then found out that somebody had gotten shot inside the store."

"It's just crazy out here how the world's coming to," Edwards said. "I thought this could happen to anybody. It could happen anywhere."
