GREENWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) — A 55-year-old woman has died after getting shot in the head Monday.
Cecelia Cooper Laverne Babcock was found inside a home after 43-year-old Randy A. Sutt got into a standoff with police late Monday morning.
Sutt in the Johnson County Jail facing charges of attempted murder and criminal recklessness.
He is accused of shooting Babcock in the head late Monday morning and then exchanging gunfire with police as they arrived on the scene.
It all took place at a home along the 400 block of Legacy Blvd, which is in the Homecoming sub-division, just south of East Main Street.
Assistant Chief Matt Fillenwarth, listening to the scanner traffic, said shortly after police arrived at the home, "All I could hear is the officers yelling, 'he's coming out, he has a gun, he's got a gun' and you hear shots fired over the radio."
After a brief exchange of gunfire, Fillenwarth said the suspect went back inside the home and when officers saw him pointing a gun at them through a window they fired at Sutt again.
No one was injured in the exchange. Fillwnwarth said after a negotiator reached Sutt by phone, Sutt agreed to surrender.
While Sutt initially told police he was a correctional officer with the DOC in Plainfield, the Indiana DOC said he hadn't worked for them since 2018.
Babcock was taken to IU Methodist Hospital. She was put on life support, but died Monday evening as a result of her injuries.
Sutt was arrested and booked into the Johnson County Jail on Attempted Murder (Level 1 Felony) and Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony). Detectives are working with the Johnson County prosecutor to charge Sutt with murder in the case.
