INDIANAPOLIS — Keith and Sherri Papini had a seemingly idyllic family life — happily married with two healthy kids.
Then, Sherri vanished from their northern California neighborhood in 2016 as the search reached worldwide attention.
In the three-part docuseries "Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini," Keith recounts the 22-day search for his wife — and the years that followed before uncovering the truth.
"I did everything I could to find her. Miraculously, she shows up on Thanksgiving morning," Keith said.
As true crime enthusiasts are aware, many people in online forums and social media were quick to point the finger at Keith as a suspect in his wife's disappearance due to previous missing persons cases involving spouses.
However, detectives were quick to clear his name as a suspect when he passed a polygraph test.
"To be absolutely honest, during that time, it was noise to me. I didn't even pay attention to it," Keith said of people suspecting him. "I was looking for my wife. Clearly, I knew I had nothing to do with it. I understood that, unfortunately, statistically, the partner or spouse is usually behind something, but it wasn't even on my radar. I was doing everything I could to find my bride and mother of my children."
And if you thought things would go back to normal after Sherri was found, think again — Keith didn't learn the truth about her disappearance until six years later.
"It was a very tough position to be married and wanting to trust your spouse, and I think you should, but at the same time, having so many questions and there were a lot things happening that didn't click or make sense to me," Keith said. "Every day, I was trying to support her the best I could, while actively trying to solve this thing, doing everything I could with law enforcement."
Aside from the jaw-dropping revelations, the docuseries stands out for its use of countless archival footage from the investigation and gripping interviews with family, friends and officials.
"It was unique to have so much of that in the documentary, to show the timeline as well," Keith said. "I really just wanted to let people know that this wasn't just a big lie and she came home and that was it — it was consistently draining every day, and we did everything at her beck and call for six years until, ultimately, I did finally find out the truth."
All three episodes of "Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini" are now streaming on Hulu.
